Just wanted to post SOMETHING to this site. Seems like there is no activity here.
A month or so ago I had the radiator split and dump the antifreeze. Of course I needed to replace the radiator. Managed to get the car to MD Automotive and have Mark do the replacement. After the replacement radiator was in, I noticed that after starting the car in the morning, or anytime after it had cooled down, the temp would go to normal for a couple of minutes and then go about 3/4 of the way to H. Then all of a sudden the temp would go back down to normal and then repeat the cycle.
Mark had put in a new thermostat when he replaced the radiator but we figured that the new thermostat was defective and so he put another new one in. The replacement thermostat did not solve the problem.
I looked on the "big" list and saw that others had the same problem and it was solved by cleaning out the tube that ran from the thermostat to the water pump. I took and blew air through the tube to clear any blockage. This solved the problem.
Seems like the early Miata's have a tube that heats the underside of the thermostat as the car is warming. If the tube to the water pump is blocked, the water can not heat the thermostat and open the thermostat.
If anyone is having this problem, look at the tube that runs from the housing to the water pump and clean it out.

I had a problem with my stock 93 NA. It is an automatic. I got a good deal on the two-row aluminum radiator from Amazon (Yonaka Racing). It doesn't accommodate the AT so I installed a aftermarket trans cooler (like one would get for towning trailers). Everybody seems happy. I am sure the AT runs cooler.
