I just bought a 2000 miata (6 speed) with 33,000 miles, and at first it seemed great. I am now having problems getting it to go into 2nd gear (it doesn't want to at all), and 3rd gear is also getting worse! Does anyone have some suggestions? I have always heard that the miatas are/were well engineered cars so I assume the shift in and out of gears should feel really smooth. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

Most likely, your slave cylinder is going south. Very common in Miatas. To change it is not that difficult a task (1-2 hours of work) and parts only run ~$50. Not sure what a mechanic would charge you for the job...I've always done it myself. I'm sure the SOCALM guys would be willing to assist you on one of their tech days.

33.000 seams a bit soon for a slave cylinder to be going south but that is the most likley thing first check your fluid level if it is low then that is most likely the slave cylinder.. I would take it by a dealer and get a estimate on what the problum is then go from there. maby with some help from miata.net garage you might be able to fix it yourself...

Hi Dave. I can't help you with the clutch problem except to suggest you post your question in the "NB" section. Some people might read the "Lounge" section...

Dave,
I wouldn't go to a dealer for a diagnosis as straightforward as this. You should be able to figure it out via a friend/yourself/tech day. The dealer's factory trained techs are for the tough stuff. Heck, I would be willing to take a look, this kind of thing is fun to figure out.
Years ago I worked with a guy who had this same problem on his Nissan truck with about 66k on the clock. Before I knew it the dealer installed a $1300 clutch.
Just my $.02,
Danny
