What is the best way to lower Miata

I would like to lower my 97 Miata a few inches. What would be the best way to do that and still have a good ride. I tired shorter springs it lowered it but then it rode hard the shocks were compressed . How do i fix this ? Can I get shorter shocks? help!

I lowered my NA 1" with Flyin Miata springs. Rides better than stock. I might add their rear upper mounts. Haven't decided because suspension isn't bottoming out.
