Hello everyone, I was looking at a car today, and when the driver started it, it had a rhythmic ticking noise (~2bps) that came from the gut of the block and didnt seem to die away. The owner justified it by saying hes using a heavier weight oil... BS? or no?

hello - my 1994 miata has been making a ticking sound when starting up in the morning. My husband seems to think it is a valvle lifter. There's been nothing but synthetic oil in it for the last 4 yrars, 152,000 miles. It seems to go away once the oil gets around. I've also had a small but persistent oil leak from the right front of the car. Are they related? Don't know. I am taking my car in for some diagnostic testing, compression test etc. Did you find out what your tick was?

Howdy!
I have a '94 with 72k on it and have experienced the same lifter noise. I took it to my mechanic and he put the car on Mobil 1 synthetic 10-40 and the ticking went away. When it starts ticking, time for an oil change. If you go to miata.net and do a search, there's much info on this topic. Good luck!

Hi, the reason is the hydraulic push rods on the valves (this is a Google translation because these terms are a bit technical for a french like me ). Well, it's true when the oil is changed you don't hear the noise until the next drain.
