Hi, I have a beautiful 1990 Miata, which I bought last year. I am a graduate student at USC studying music, and this was the very first car I have ever owned, so don't know very much about cars. I always wanted to have a beautiful red convertible with a stick shift transmission, and I found that the Miata has been exactly the kind of car I always dreamed of!
I have been having some problems with it lately, and have discovered that professional mechanics tend to overcharge, and sometimes they don't even know what the problem is - they "fix" what they think it is, but if it doesn't solve the problem you still have to pay for it! I am an impoverished graduate student and can't really afford to pay for expensive repair bills.
More importantly, I am very interested in learning new things, and am hoping to learn a lot about my Miata - how it works and how to fix it. Cars are one of the areas of my life where I feel confused and helpless -- and I have decided that I don't want to be ignorant anymore. I just finished reading "Auto Repair for Dummies," and am looking forward to learning a whole lot more!
I have a couple of problems with my car as of now. It hesitates when I try to accelerate for a few minutes after it first starts up, I have a fairly large oil leak, there are a couple of noises I'm unsure about, I need to buy a new door, and I think I may want to get a new passenger seat. I don't really know what to do, or whether it would be more cost effective to just start over again with another Miata. I'm a bit in over my head, and would greatly appreciate finding someone with more experience who could help me.
